The Post Office requires filters for all birds! |
Remember, shipping birds by mail is a privilege, please use proper, USPS approved containers. Using the US mail is one of the best things the AU ever did for the sport, we must not do anything to jeopardize this privilege. There is a very fine line between our aviculture industry, the USPS, and the Airline Industry; they are just looking for us to make a slip.
We all depend on a good
relationship.
Please
keep it legal.
Your Postmaster will thank you, your airline will thank you. ™
And so will your fellow aviculturists.

Why does the USPS require filters? Zoonotic diseases are those diseases shared by animals and humans. Approximately 150 zoonotic diseases are known to exist. Birds do indeed carry diseases via dust and dander. Horizon's filtered containers can prevent dust and dander from either escaping, or being introduced to your birds. The potential threat to USPS employees is there and could turn off our shipping "luxury" overnight. This is only one reason the USPS employees union mandates filtered containers. While histoplasmosis is probably the most common
disease associated with pigeons, chlamydiosis and salmonellosis are also
high on the list. The Department of Health has so very few
documented cases of communicable diseases transmitted from birds to
humans, so please, let's keep it that way. Below are some links found
just by doing a web search on " bird zoonoses" |
