FEDERAL EXPRESS AND
POST OFFICE CONTRACTUAL AGREE ON CARRING LIVES
Federal Express and the US post office have reached a contractual agreement
on carrying "LIVES". Starting on September 25, Federal Express has
taken over the routs previously served by Kitty Hawk (see below for a listing).
This is a contractual arrangement through the post office only as Federal
Express will not take "LIVE" shipments directly. You will need to
deliver your birds to a post office - not a Federal Express Office. If you
experience any problems with this new service, please contact your postal
official, not Federal Express.
At the present time the Post Office will only have Federal Express transport
"LIVES" to and from the USPS AMFs listed below. As Federal Express
gains more experience, other AMFs will be added to the routs. The full Priority
Mail Network effective date has yet to be determined. Commercial airlines are
still carrying lives.
BSA is still working to put the temperature guidelines in place by regulation
or legislation. BSA is also investigating the problems that shippers have
experienced with insurance. We will keep you posted on our progress.

Horizon
has received confirmation that Federal Express and United Parcel Service
(UPS) will begin accepting lives as USPS mail. The details will be
critical in determining how comprehensive and useful this new service will be,
but we are hopeful. The
USPS advises that UPS will accept lives once they have their network in place.
We anticipate this to begin mid to late September.
Additionally, Federal Express signed a new agreement with USPS. Under this
contract they are required to carry live animals, effective
October 1, 2006
. They will carry lives on both their networks (day and night). Again, the
devil is in the details. I will keep you posted.
We are also told by the USPS that
Kitty
Hawk
will
end their relationship with the USPS effective
October
1, 2006
.
When they discontinue accepting lives, the surcharge will revert back to $0.20
everywhere except
Minneapolis
and
Detroit
where
Northwest Airlines is used. These two markets are still being evaluated.

BOSTON
– Package-delivery
company FedEx Corp. and the U.S. Postal Service Tuesday said they had renewed
through 2013 an agreement for FedEx's FedEx Express unit to transport domestic
mail by air.
The
contract, expected to generate about $8 billion in revenue over its
seven-year life span, calls for FedEx Express to transport about 4 million
pounds of mail between
U.S.
airports
each day.

This
is a very positive move and should help ease our shipping problems. Birdshippers.org
and the AU national office have been working for some time to affect positive
change and it appears to have been successful.
The information below
is what the AU received from the USPS
as of Friday, September 15, 2006.
“Lives mail will be transported on the FedEx Network, beginning with mail
acceptance on Monday, September 25, 2006. Transportation of lives on Kitty
Hawk will cease on November 1. Transportation on commercial carriers will
continue to be available.
POSTAGE SURCHARGES:
Effective September 25, the only live animal surcharges are $1.00 per pound
for all lives accepted for transport by air from offices served by
Minneapolis/St. Paul MN (MSP) and Detroit MI (DTW) airports, and $0.20 per
pound for day-old poultry accepted everywhere else.
LIVES MAILED AS EXPRESS:
Express Mail lives can be accepted by retail Monday through Friday for the
complete FedEx night-turn network with the following exceptions:
· No lives on FedEx to and from locations served by the St. Louis MO (STL)
airport (ZIP Span: 620, 622-624, 628-631, 633, 634, 636-639, 650-653). St.
Louis lives may be transported on available commercial routings.
· Queen bees may not be transported on FedEx to and from locations on the
Queen Bees Exception List.
· No Express lives on FedEx to (destinating in) delivery locations served by
Huntsville AL (HSV, ZIP Span: 356-358). Available commercial transportation
may be used.
In addition, Express Mail lives to and from locations served by Honolulu HI (HNL,
ZIP span: 967-969) and Anchorage AK (ANC, ZIP Span: 995-997) MAY be
transported on FedEx but are a two-day commitment. (HNL-destinating Lives are
subject to State of Hawaii restrictions.)
